GDN.Net Windows 98 Setup

The first step is to get to the Internet Control Panel. To get there click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.

When the control panel comes up, select Internet, or Internet Options, whichever one you have on your machine.

This is the Internet control panel. Click on the Connection button at the top to display this screen, then press the Connect in the upper-left hand corner to load the Internet Connection Wizard.

Select the button in the middle, you have an existing Internet account, and then click Next.

Select the first option, you are using an Internet Service Provider, and click Next.

Select the first option, connect using my phone line, and then click Next.

Select the first option, Create a new dial-up connection, regardless of what is in the box in the bottom of the screen. Most users will not have anything in that screen anyway. Once you have selected the first button, click Next.

Remove the check mark from Dial using the area code, then type in our phone number into the phone number field. Since you are calling a local number, the area code is irrelevant and can lead to unnessesary long-distance dialing.

The number for our 33.6k service is 371-1368 and our 56k number is 377-7997.

When you are finished, click Next.

Your username and password are both chosen when you sign up. Both should be lower-case.

33.6k customers will simply enter their username, example jsmith or demo.

56k customers must type their entire email address, example jsmith@gdn.net or demo@gdn.net

When you are finished, click Next.

You will not need to change any advanced settings for GDN.Net. Simply select No and click Next.

You may either leave the default connection name or you can type in GDN.Net. This setting is irrelevant to your internet connection. When you are finished, click Next.

If you would like to use the email account that comes with your GDN service, then Windows 98 will want to know a few more things about your account. Select Yes and click Next.

Simply enter your name here, or the name you would like to appear in the From field on outgoing mail. When you are finished, click Next.

Your email address is your username, followed by gdn.net - for example if your username is jsmith then your email address is jsmith@gdn.net

When you are finished, click Next.

You will need to enter the address for our mail server, which is mail.gdn.net. When you are finished, click Next.

You will need to type your username and password one more time to let Windows store your account information in your mail program. When you are finished, click Next.

You can leave the default name in this field. This setting is irrelevant to your Internet account. When you are finished, click Next.

Your account comes with access to the UseNet (NNTP) news service, however, most users will never use this service. Select No, and click Next. If you would like to use this service, the server name is news.gdn.net.

We recommend that users NOT use this service, because it will lead to more spam (junk) email being sent to your Internet account. Select No, and click Next.

That's it - your computer is now completely ready to use GDN.Net as your ISP! Enjoy.
