Relics
The funny looking image to the right, is a Civil War mini ball. Despite all the modernization on Daytona Beach, remnants of the Civil War still shows up, and here's the proof. Musket parts are still found along the beach on occasion, too, along with other Civil War artifacts.
While hunting a turn-of-the-century yard in a small North Central Florida town, I came upon this bronze medal. It says "A-U-S-W-V," which I took to mean "A United States War Veteran." Because the war is not specifically stated, I took it to mean "World War One." Someone recently E-mailed me and said it was a medal from the United States Spanish War (American Spanish War). Now I am really confused. Any ideas?
This picture by the way, is about the actual size.
I'm told this pillbox goes back to the 1940's and is a University of Florida souvenir. It came in as a penny four inches down in a parking lot. The box is made of brass and was once brightly decorated with school colors.
The University of Florida memorabilia is quite collectable. Some private collections have exceded over one million dollars in value.
I often find tins in old yards. This one is made of copper and cleaned up well with soap and water. I also rubbed in some olive oil. I have no idea what "Ploughs Black & White" means, do you?
A recent viewer wrote and said this was once a tin containing an ethnic skin bleaching agent made by the now well known Maybalene Cosmetic Company. At the time, around 1910, it was Plough Brother's Skin Care Products.
Found this pressed penny in a Jacksonville, Florida public park. It says, "Jacksonville Zoological Gardens." Don't you know it came in as a penny! . . . The little joys!
No, it is not a valuable find, but things like these add to the fun of metal detecting.
