Broaches & Pins

Just before dark in a Gainesville, Florida park, I found this gold (bronze) and blue enameled pin. It is in the image of an eagle clutching an anchor. At the top it says "A. 8. N. U." and on the bottom "USA." Maybe someone out there can tell me what this represents. I have not the slightest idea.

This handsome ceramic and metal backed broach was found not far from my farm on a dirt median strip. It is an area where many people ride horses and was probably dropped by a rider.

Sometimes it is nice to hunt close to home. It is amazing what you will come up with when relaxed.

My teen-aged boys talked me into taking them Christmas shopping at Wal-Mart, only I did not want to go in. Instead, I stayed out in the parking lot and swung the detector for a few minutes. There was a place where there was a patch of dirt between parking lots from another store. I found this bronze pin only a few inches down. It is about the size of a dime and heavy with a pin and lock on the rear for pinning it on a lapel or shirt front. I have been told it is a "Future Farmers of America" pin.

This is one of my favorites and the easiest broach find to date. I went to a Gainesville, Florida school yard to metal detect and when I opened the door of the car and looked down, there it was at my feet. I never swung the coil over it. The broach was on the surface of the dirt parking lot. It is gold with enameled colors.

School yards are some of the best resources for jewelry. I often wonder if the kids do not at times take mom's jewelry and promptly lose it in the playground. This beautiful piece came from a rural North Central Florida school yard about four inches deep in sand.

Here is a nice little broach I found in a courthouse lawn in Chiefland, Florida. Just right for the holiday spirit. Nice find, too, as it is made of silver.

This fourteen karat gold broach is fashioned after a sand dollar and was found on a beach about five inches down in sand at Grand Bahamas Island. The beach is called Zanadu and is at the rear of a very ritzy resort called the Princess.

The image to the left is special. It is a mask broach with diamonds and weighs over two ounces. The dimensions are approx. 2" x 3". The diamonds are Zirconia but the metal is sterling silver for sure. This item among others was found on Tano Beach, Grand Bahamas Island.
